SmartCaptions or Brevidy for captions in Premiere Pro?
Need captions for a Premiere edit, or a toolkit for producing social clips? That distinction matters more than the lowest subscription price. SmartCaptions focuses on transcription and translation; Brevidy advertises a broader set of caption styling and video-production tools.
Start with the job you need to finish. For a transcript you can correct in Premiere and turn into captions, consider SmartCaptions. For animated caption presets, automatic cuts or active-speaker cropping, look closely at Brevidy and the tier that includes those tools.

Captioning, video-workflow and allowance minutes describe different operations. Do not treat this table as a cost-per-finished-video benchmark. These are base fees: SmartCaptions offers opt-in paid additional usage, and vendor limits, add-ons and checkout terms still apply. Brevidy’s unlimited Producer captions do not mean unlimited AutoCut or AutoCrop.
Choose Brevidy when the social-editing tools are the reason to buy
If your deliverable needs animated captions, preset styles, cuts and reframing for an active speaker, Brevidy’s advertised tools are directly relevant. A higher subscription fee can be worthwhile if those tools fit your editing process. Check which features are in Captioner and which require Producer before comparing cost.
We have not tested Brevidy’s output or speed. Its broader toolkit is a reason to evaluate it, not a claim that it will save a particular number of hours. SmartCaptions is not presented here as a replacement for all of those features.
Choose SmartCaptions for a focused transcription or translation workflow
If you need text from spoken footage, corrections and captions inside Premiere, SmartCaptions has a lower entry monthly base fee. Starter also has fewer stated minutes than Brevidy Captioner, and the minute labels differ. Compare the operations you will actually use rather than assuming the cheaper plan covers more work.
The 26.2+ plugin is useful to evaluate when you want to work with Premiere’s transcript and caption tools instead of a separate caption-styling system. If Adobe’s own transcription already meets your language and workflow needs, you may not need another subscription at all.
The SmartCaptions version changes the steps
On Premiere Pro 26.2 or later, install the new plugin from Adobe Marketplace. It transcribes, and can translate, into Premiere’s transcript. Review the text in the Text panel, then use Create captions from transcript. The plugin does not directly write a caption track.
The classic extension writes captions and has its own styling, line-break and timing controls. Use the classic installation guide for earlier supported Premiere versions. Do not assume classic styling or word-animation features carry over to the native-transcript plugin. Both plugins and the web app share one account and allowance; installing both does not multiply your minutes.
Use the same short clip to make the choice
Choose footage with the accents, names and audio conditions you normally edit. Check remaining text corrections, caption timing, line breaks and the final export. If animation or speaker cropping is essential, include that step in the trial instead of testing transcription alone.
Brevidy advertises no card required for its first free caption; do not assume every seven-day trial path has the same billing conditions. Read the selected trial terms before starting. SmartCaptions gives five minutes once per account. Neither trial is evidence of an accuracy or speed winner until you inspect your own result.
